Congrats, Goodbye To Revver

LiveUniverse has bought Revver.com.

It’s a quiet end of an era to a company that made a difference in our life.

$46755.20 is the total haul we made with Revver over a 10 month period (7/06-5/07).  Not too bad.  Helped us limp by until we found a better ad sales partner.

I remember the lavish launch party at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood.  It was a big deal.  I mean Charles Fleischer was there.

It was literally my first big Hollywood party.  I looked around and saw all of those people and really thought that they were going to lead the charge.

It was also my first experience of startup hype and it’s taught me to take all of these VC-funded pipedreams with a heavy dose of the sodium chloride.

As I saw most of my friends leave the company (and only Angela Wilson Gyetvan, pr mistress extraordinaire remains of the crew I knew) and we migrated away, I always kept pulling for them and the dream they inspired.

I’ve heard all the stories of what went wrong (from many different perspectives), and I’ve had a few encounters with the new owner and heard lots of things about him too.

Sorry I’m being intentionally vague here…

But cut to the quick, I just deleted all of the Ninja vids from Revver.

I know everything supposed to stay the same, and that we will still own our IP, but it just makes me feel queasy.

And why feel queasy over a few hundred legacy video plays a month?

Your mileage may very.  Nothing has changed yet, just use your common sense and as always do what is best for you and your content.

  • I’ve heard that YouTube’s TOS allows them to continue using your videos even after you delete them. I wonder if Revver’s TOS states anything similar?

  • I wonder how many other people will jump ship over the ownership change, just in case?

With regards to neovids – a human-readably TOS akin to what Creative Commons did for copyright would certainly be nice to see emerge.

  • It is a bit strange. Picking a video hosting site and wondering if they are going to last. I’ve been using Vimeo recently. HD hosting and the best Flash encoding I’ve seen on a Video Hosting site. Hope they stick around.

  • I hear ya Kent…I remember picking Revver for our 12 to Watch list at TVWeek, thinking its revenue-sharing model could challenge YouTube. Boy was I wrong…

  • Wait, why did you delete all the videos? Seems like a very impulsive thing to do over just a change of ownership. Was it just so you could make a statement and blog about it?
