Helio: Amp’d redux

Word on the street is Helio is having some problems.
This on the heels of Sprint’s massive writedown, and Amp’d Mobile self-destructing last summer.
I have news for any of you trying to get rich off of making Mobile Video content.
You aren’t going to.  Ever.
There’s money in ringtones, there’s money in providing instant services and info via [...]

Memo To ABC, embrace your audience

I’d love to embed the first episode of Squeegees, the first show out of Disney’s Stage 9 studio, but I can’t.  They’ve turned it off on YouTube, and don’t make it available on their ABC.com site.  And forget about podcasting it.
And check out the first vid, low views, lots of comments comparatively and they’re all [...]

Movies At SXSW I Want To See

Last year at SXSW I didn’t see any films.  Sorta mad at myself for that.
This year I’d like to see these flicks:
Baghead
Director/writers: Jay Duplass & Mark Duplass. Starring: Steve Zissis, Ross Partridge, Greta Gerwig, Elise Muller.
An in-depth study of the relationship dynamics for a group of desperate actor friends. And [...]

You Can’t Solve New Media With Marketing

Douglas said to me regarding the disappointing Quarterlife debut: it just goes to show that you can’t market crap (or something like that).
The online numbers don’t lie, the Quarterlife wasn’t really embraced online and now it’s been unbraced by TV too.
The folks behind Quarterlife are smart, but they did things too much in the old [...]

“You don’t need to spend $5 million on a pilot”

So says Les Moonves.
The door has been opened a crack, the business model of mass audiences is in a tailspin, and the big boys are starting to panic.
What does it mean for you?
It means the Indie TV movement is on the rise.  The club of show runners is now open to anyone with a dream [...]

Predictably Irrational

From NPR:
The fact that we live in both the social world and the market world has many implications for our personal lives. From time to time, we all need someone to help us move something, or to watch our kids for a few hours, or to take in our mail when we’re out of town. [...]

Buying The Cool

Puppetmaster David Hellyer writes:
How do I know i won’t ever make any money out of the partner program? Simple really, I don’t receive anywhere near enough views. Top YouTubers like Nalts, LisaNova and Renetto can reasonably expect to get 10,000 - 20,000 views per video regardless of what it is, with some getting far more! [...]

Engagement: What it is and isn’t

Look VideoEgg, you’re a cool dude, but why don’t you sit down and be quiet for a change.
Your new advertising scheme is NOT brand advertising.
Brand advertising is inherently anti-action.  It’s about building awareness.  It’s not anything resembling cost-per-click or cost-per-action.  It’s an ad on the Superbowl or Desperate Housewives.  It’s sponsoring the X-Games or a [...]

Sage Advice About Money

John Scalzi writes:
More to the point, coming to peace with the fact that writing is likely not to make you a lot of money means that you can realistically look at that money going forward, which will put you in a better financial position than someone who just blunders along assuming that any minute now [...]

Congrats, Goodbye To Revver

LiveUniverse has bought Revver.com.
It’s a quiet end of an era to a company that made a difference in our life.
$46755.20 is the total haul we made with Revver over a 10 month period (7/06-5/07).  Not too bad.  Helped us limp by until we found a better ad sales partner.
I remember the lavish launch party at [...]
