Several big things for online video producers over the last couple of days:
- Online Video Use Soars Because of the Writer’s Strike
- Tivo opening up for more Podcasts
- Online Video Traffic Doubles in 2007
Some brief thoughts.
I’m with Liz, it’s hard to know the exact effect the strike is having on driving the short term growth of onoine video consumption. The Pew study shows that there is a rapid growth in users in general.
The strike certainly must be part of the growth, but in such a time of such expansion it’s hard to pin what’s truly driving things (i.e., Oprah launching a YouTube presence with a full episode probably has as much to do with driving females into the space as the strike).
The Tivo thing is great, but I haven’t seen how to submit podcasts to the service. Until now it’s been pretty closed, open to only a few high profile partners like Rocketboom.
If Tivo wants to succeed with this, they would be wise to follow Apple’s lead with the iTunes podcast directory. Make it free to publishers, with very light barriers to entry and then promote, promote, promote.

Forty-one shows may seem like a large number of video podcasts however, if you’re a geek like me, you probably subscribe to a number of shows which TiVoCast doesn’t provide access to. To get around this limitation of TiVoCast, I’ve come up with a simple solution which utilizes TiVo Desktop Plus and iTunes…”
